After spending two years cutting their teeth on the live circuit, Little Bastard have hit the studio to lay down their debut album, refining it into something unlike anything else in the Australian musical landscape.
Raucous. Energetic. Uninhibited.
The songs traverse a fair bit of territory both sonically and thematically, switching from nostalgic medium-paced anthems to deep, slow-burning ballads and back to the “party punk” aesthetic that the band’s live shows are known for.
Album openers “High For You” and “I Just Want You Home” burn through the speakers with exuberance and are testament to the band’s turbulent stage performances, which regularly leave audiences sweaty, breathless and heading towards a pretty heavy hangover.
The record shows some serious songwriting chops. Check out the heartstring-tugging roadside murder ballad “Crosses On The Highway”; Dan D’Arcy’s delightful Western-esque detour, “Desert Roller”; the War on Drugs-like “Be My Kind”; and Johnny Took’s reflective closing cut, “Where Did My Love Go?”.
The Little Bastard story starts in 2012 when Johnny Took (vocals/guitar) met Ross Tipper (percussion/harmonica/vocals) at a pub, discovering they had very similar music tastes. Two soon became three, and three became seven … as the Bastards multiplied. Trevor Davies memorably joined the band during one gig, meeting Liam Hoskins for the first time, on stage, mid-set.
The Little Bastard attitude was forged on the road, as they quickly became a must-see live band, clocking up thousands of kilometres in the van, touring with The Snowdroppers, Sticky Fingers and Wagons, as well as playing Falls Festival, Peats Ridge, Cherry Rock, Bigsound, Boogie and the Ballarat Beer Festival.
The Sydney seven-piece took their “no-bullshit approach” into the studio, smashing out the record in eight days at Annandale’s Jungle Studios with producer Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels).
Ultimately this is acoustic anchored punk rock, but even in the more delicate moments of the record Little Bastard will make sure your heart's still pumpin' and your head’s still noddin'.
No other Australian band sounds quite like Little Bastard.
